Chris began his law enforcement career in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was employed as a police officer and held multiple positions including Defense and Arrest Tactics (D.A.A.T.) Inservice Instructor.
In 2000, Chris moved his family when he was hired as a lateral transfer in Colorado. Chris has continued to teach other officers as an FBI Defensive Tactics Instructor, Defensive Tactics Inservice Instructor, PR 24 Instructor, and Pepper/O.C. Spray Instructor.
Chris is co-author and a lead instructor of the Defensive Tactics and Active Shooter Response Tactics program around the world for the non-profit company ANSER. Chris has also authored and instructed use of force classes for countless professionals around the world. Chris has worked in many capacities as a law enforcement professional from patrol officer to tactical response team (SWAT) member, and is currently a detective.
Chris’s official certifications include: NRA Refuse to be a Victim Instructor (RTBAV), FBI Defensive Tactics Instructor, Taser Instructor, O.C./Pepper Spray Instructor, PR 24 Instructor, ASP Expandable Baton Instructor, Colorado POST Handgun Instructor, NRA Sniper Instructor, and FLETC Active Shooter Response Instructor. Chris is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, with a B.S. in Criminal Justice. While in college, Chris was co-captain of the Division 1 track team.
In 2014, Chris, along with friend Bob McCafferty, created B.R.A.V.E. Defense, Inc. The ever-expanding mission of B.R.A.V.E. is to teach others how to protect themselves from violent encounters.
Bob graduated from Kean University with a degree in Public Administration/Criminal Justice. In 1999 Bob was hired as a police officer in the state of Colorado. As a police officer Bob has served in many capacities including patrol officer, patrol training officer, tactical response team (SWAT) member, and academy instructor. Bob is a certified instructor in many areas including defensive tactics, taser, PR24, and O.C./pepper spray. Bob is also certified through the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) as a Police Officers Response to an Active Shooter Instructor, NTOA Shield Instructor, and SWAT School Instructor. Bob has also trained law enforcement officers on fugitive apprehension, search warrant operations, hostage rescue, buy busts, bus/airplane operations, and dignitary personal security.
As a SWAT team member, Bob has been a part of the protection team for President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Secretary of Education Rod Paige, and most recently President Obama and Vice President Biden. Bob also holds the following certifications: Office of Emergency Management Full Scale Exercise, Response to Suicide Bombing Attacks, Response to Terrorist Bombings Awareness, Threat and Risk Assessment, Terror at Russia’s Beslan Middle School, and Interviewing and Interrogation.
Bob and Chris developed a program to train law enforcement professionals in rescue techniques to be used during an active shooter event. Bob was photographed for the 2012 and 2013 issues of Tactical Edge NTOA demonstrating the lifts and carries used in this program. Bob also developed a shield program to train law enforcement professional on how to effectively use a ballistic shield.
Bob was a competitive wrestler for 17 years and was divisionally ranked. He has also volunteered in his community as a coach for high school wrestlers and a motivational speaker to young adults and their parents. In his program “Life,” Bob addresses the topic of living life to the fullest, making smart choices, and building family unity.
Bob and Chris have learned over the years that there are many crimes that can be prevented in our community, and through a team approach they created B.R.A.V.E. Defense, Inc. Their mission is to provide realistic training and education to the community and law enforcement officers to help prevent and defend against violent encounters.
Dave began his law enforcement career as a sheriff’s deputy in Oregon in 1992, assigned to both the marine division and the patrol division. During that time Dave also worked part time at the Oregon Police Academy where he was an instructor in defensive tactics, O.C./pepper spray, and collapsible baton. He taught these same courses to multiple law enforcement agencies and was the inservice coordinator/instructor for the Sheriff’s Office. Dave also spent six years on the tactical enforcement (SWAT) team as lead sniper/observer.
Dave accepted a police position in Colorado in 2001. He has worked in many capacities in law enforcement including patrol officer, neighborhood policing officer, crime prevention officer, patrol sergeant, and currently patrol lieutenant.
Dave’s relevant instructor certifications include: NRA Refuse to be a Victim Instructor (RTBAV), NRA Basic Handgun Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, O.C./Pepper Spray Instructor, ASP Expandable Baton Instructor, FLETC Active Shooter Response Instructor, and Internationally-Certified Crime Prevention Practitioner. Dave is also one of the only three certified Logistics Sections Chiefs for the Office of Emergency Management.
Dave has over 28 years of military experience and has served in both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn. These opportunities have provided him with a global perspective on violent crimes.
Most recently, Dave has specialized in church security, beginning with the formation of the Faith-Based Security Coalition following the New Life Church shooting incident. His focus is on development of the security team within the church and the ability of that team to respond to real life emergencies through scenario-based training.
